Ford jobs at Dunton

Ford is hiring up to 100 new engineers at its small and medium vehicle engineering and development centre in Dunton, Essex. About 4,000 engineers, designers and support staff work at Dunton. Another 70 jobs are being created at its sister R&Dsite in Merkenich, Germany.

BBA buys US firm

BBA Group has acquired UNC Airwork Corporation, the Millville, New Jersey-based aviation engine, landing gear and propellers service company, from parent company UNC for £31.7m.

Brent Spar decision

The Government has approved a plan to dispose of the Brent Spar oil platform, three years after environmental campaigners forced Shell to scrap proposals to dump it in the North Sea. Cleaned sections of the Brent Spar’s hull will be used to build a new quay extension at Mekjarvik, near Stavanger in Norway. The topsides of the platform will be removed and taken ashore to be scrapped.

James Dickie sold

Specialist engineering group Eliza Tinsley, which has operations in the Midlands, Derbyshire and the north east, has acquired specialist engineer James Dickie for £14m. Dickie manufactures components and sub-assemblies for the construction equipment, commercial vehicle and materials handling industries. The company has a workforce of almost 800 employees located at six sites, five in the UK and one in the US.
