Smith assesses

Welsh woes

The Welsh education system is not attracting enough people to careers in manufacturing despite the local sector’s buoyancy, the Welsh Office has said. A consultation document on a new economic strategy says Wales lacks services companies to support larger manufacturers.

INA Bearing is undertaking a year-long expansion programme to nearly double the production area at its plant at Llanelli, Dyfed, creating 100 jobs.

Freedom bid

Wolverhampton’s Freedom Forge, manufacturer of aerospace engine rings, has been acquired by its managing director Paul Emmerling from Freedom Forge Corporation with the backing of investment capital group 3i.

Darchem buys

Darchem Engineering has acquired Kent Heat Treatment, Sittingbourne, from its owner Tony Cananvina for an undisclosed sum. The business will be added to Darchem’s Expert Heat Treatment group.
