Nissan has targeted its supply chain in mini workshops mirroring its three-year Cogent programme with main component suppliers, designed to get suppliers to co-develop components with the car maker.

A total of 90 suppliers have completed a fast-track version of the Cogent programme that was launched in December 1995 with funding from the Office of Science and Technology. Nissan believes that up to 80% of the cost, quality and performance of a product is determined by design.

* Cranfield University, Nissan’s partner, will use the programme to produce a methodology for wider dissemination across industry.
