Microsoft’s Windows NT Server v4.0 is the best selling server operating system, according to IDC, the US group.
Microsoft says that its optimised Client and Server offerings, both on the Win32 API, are key. It also points to its flexibility, scalability, GUI and CASE tools – and its SQL Server, OLE/COM technologies, Internet facilities, plus Microsoft BackOffice products and ActiveX.
* At a recent Dickinson Control Systems training day, Bob Bloom, of Intellution, said that Microsoft is phasing out both Windows 3.11 and Windows 95. He said that by the end of this year there will be just one operating system – Windows NT.
* Meanwhile, the Windows CE operating system, aimed at small devices, like hand-held PCs and Internet units, is to be ported to the Intel Architecture, Motorola Power PC and ARM machines.
