I am grateful for the positive comments made about the Engineering Council’s Memorandum of Understanding with the Government (The Engineer 10 April).

However, I feel your report contained one or two points which gave slightly the wrong impression.

First, the council speaks only on behalf of the engineering profession and not the whole of the engineering community.

There is a range of bodies representing a variety of engineering interests.

Secondly, the council will not be `taking precedence over the various industry institutions, including the civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical institutions’.

The relationship is a partnership, not a hegemony.

These institutions have, and will continue to have, their own dialogue with Government.

The Engineering Council, however, will represent the profession on issues with a nationwide perspective and on the international stage.
