Government plans for engineering are too focused on high-tech firms at the expense of traditional manufacturers, a leading industrialist and Labour peer has said.

Lord Paul, founder of engineering group Caparo, told The Engineer that the Competitiveness White Paper should have had manufacturing more in mind.

He said: ‘High-tech is only useful if other industries exist to buy their products.’
