Lotus’s Malaysian owner, Proton, has appointed the first members of its new board. Chairman Tan Sri Yahaja has selected Mohammed Zaihal as his chief executive. The finance director will be Suhaimi Jaffar. Zaihal was previously the finance director at Proton.

The remainder of the board has yet to be appointed.

* Aston Martin’s chairman, David Price, has announced his departure. Ford, the company’s owner, is to dispense with the position under the Ford 2000 global restructuring programme.

Vince Harris, technical director of the Engineering and Marine Training Authority, is to become director of education, innovation and employment affairs at the Chemical Industries Association. He replaces Jim Foulds, who has retired. Harris was a group personnel manager at GEC.

Dr David Jack, engineering and manufacturing manager at Sandvik Coromant, will join machine tool manufacturer Yamazaki as deputy managing director.

Basil Jeffries, former chief executive of Courtaulds Packaging, has joined IPT group as chief executive of its technical textiles division.

Derek Robinson Machine Tools, the Leicester-based distributor for Cincinnati Milacron and 600 Lathes, has appointed two co-managing directors to replace the retiring Michael Cartwright. Sales director Philip Burdett will be managing director in charge of sales. Clive Robinson, son of the founder Derek Robinson, will join him as managing director of finance and administration.

Vibration equipment manufacturer Metrix Instrument has made Bob Lorenzetto regional manager for Europe and Africa.

Chas Nott is managing director of Asset management software supplier, SQL Systems.

Tony Gilroy, president of transition operations at LucasVarity, has been promoted to the board as chief operating officer. The move will let chief executive Victor Rice concentrate on strategy. Gilroy has become responsible for running the company’s seven operating divisions

Cegelec Projects has David Wilson as managing director of its new power electronics division. Previously divisional manager of mining, marine and industrial drives, Wilson will head the new division to supply Cegelec’s other divisions: marine systems, metal industries, transportation and industrial power supplies

Weir Group’s Darchem Engineering has appointed Steve James as commercial director. James comes from Senior Engineering, where he was divisional commercial manager for construction services
