Shake-up creates three semi-autonomous divisions

A reorganisation of ICI businesses and board directors is shaping up. From April the company will be divided into three divisions – Industrial Chemicals, Coatings, and Materials and Performance Chemicals – each with its own semi-autonomous director.

Rob Margetts takes charge of Industrial Chemicals which will comprise chemicals and polymers, explosives, polyester and Tioxide. He is currently in charge of research and technology.

Peter Kirby, chief executive of ICI Paints, will become Coatings business director, and will look after decorative paints, ICI Autocolour and packaging and industrial coatings.

ICI has still to find a business director for the third division, Materials and Performance Chemicals, which includes acrylics, performance chemicals and polyurethanes. Its executive director Mike Brogden retires in June.

Promotions to the board include Rona Fairhead, who will continue her role in charge of planning and acquisitions as a director.

Richard Stillwell will take over as director of personnel and safety, health and environment.

* Magnox Electric will dispense with the post of chief executive when the incumbent Ray Hall retires at the end of September. Instead, Dennis Joynson, executive director of liabilities and decommissioning, will take over as managing director, operations, taking on Hall’s responsibilties. The established finance director, Stephen Ogle, will report to the chairman, Mark Baker.

Weir Group’s subsidiary company Strachan & Henshaw has made David Smillie its engineering director. Smillie comes from GEC Alsthom Power Generation, where he was engineering manager.

Mott MacDonald’s controls and communications division has promoted three project managers to associate status. Sarah Knowles, Henry Connor and David Pitcher will all report to division directors.

David Gresham has been promoted to managing director from deputy managing director of Elf Atochem UK.

Stuart Whiting, KCI Carruthers’ quality assurance manager, has become post contracts manager.

Hamworthy Marine Technology has made Joseph Thomas manager of its rudder systems business unit.

Robin North has joined the senior engineering team of ARRK, a stereolithography company.

The International Marine Contractors Association has made Tony Read its chief executive. He is currently executive secretary and technical director for the international E&P Forum. Jane Bugler will be technical director. She is currently head of the Health & Safety Executive’s Policy Section on emergency, planning, pipelines and major hazard aspects of transport.
