British Steel’s 400 workers at its Hartlepool and Stockton pipe mills, who produce oil, gas and sewage pipes, are expected to be more secure in their jobs following an alliance with Europipe, a German joint venture company.

Europipe, formed in 1991 by Dillinger Huttenwerke and Mannesmannrohren-Werke, operates pipe mills in Germany, France and the US. The new enlarged Europipe will be one third owned by British Steel.

The merger has been likely since 1995 when British Steel put its large-diameter longitudinally submerged arc welded pipe businesses into a new subsidiary, British Steel Large Diameter Pipes.
