Secondary schools will be able to specialise in teaching engineering and manufacturing skills, education secretary David Blunkett announced this week.

The schools will teach the national curriculum as well as specialist subjects, and will be able to obtain support from industry and the government.

The plan was one of a number of measures announced by Blunkett in response to the National Skills Task Force’s final report, which revealed skills shortages and poor adult literacy and numeracy levels.

He also announced a £2.5m package to help improve skills in small businesses.
