Government plans to privatise the UK’s air traffic control system may be grounded after a computer upgrade project had to be suspended. National Air Traffic Services sacked IT group EDS after EDS asked for further extensions. The new computer system was supposed to go into operation this year, but delays had pushed the completion date past 2002. Nine potential bidders have expressed an interest in NATS, including a consortium of airlines and five aerospace and defence groups.
