PUMPS & VALVES

Modular way to save money

Pumps based on modular components provide the lowest cost of ownership across a wide range of process applications from pharmaceuticals to paper mills, says vendor Sterling Fluid Systems.

IsoChem pumps meet ISO/EN standards covering single-stage horizontal end-suction volute pumps and are available in back pull-out bare and pull-out close-coupled versions. Options include a choice of mechanical seals to DIN standards and magnetic drives or canned motors.

Pumps have closed or semi-open impellers to suit light and heavy duty applications. Providing capacities up to 650m3/hr up to 150m head, they operate at temperatures to 400 C and pressures to 25 bar. They can be made from cast iron, stainless steel or special alloys.

Energy costs have been slashed at potato products company WCF Foods in Yorkshire since it installed a motor controller on a heavy duty 15kW pump used to treat grit-laden process water before it is emptied into the sewage system.

An Elm SMX controller has cut energy costs by 75%, using fuzzy logic to provide tight control of motor load giving near-unity power factor.

The pump runs continuously and saves more than £2,000 a year.

New impeller design featuring double row vanes extends Ingersoll-Dresser’s CPX chemical process pumps into applications where a combination of low flow rates and high total head is required.

The Safety Selector Valve dual pressure relief system enables operators to switch smoothly from one valve to another without process interruption.

Continuous overpressure protection guarantees less than 3% pressure drop in the valve inlet, allowing maintenance of either valve to be carried out safely without shutting down the process.

Maximum flexibility combined with high performance make Ingersoll-Rand’s PD series 25mm ARO double diaphragm pump ideal for OEMs, the company says.

Extending the 1993 design, this pump has a capacity of 17litres/min. A 38mm inlet connection provides higher suction capability over 6.1m for ‘particularly difficult’ applications.

It can be mounted in any position. One version made from shock-absorbing glass-filled polypropylene avoids the needs for frequent re-torquing of fasteners. The pump handles a range of fluids including inks, solvents, paint, starch, dry cleaning fluids and caustics.

Prominent’s latest pH D-type dosing pump has an integrated controller and connection sockets so it can accept an input directly from a pH sensor without a separate controller.

Accepting pH inputs from 0 to 14, the pump has an infinitely variable metering capacity of 13 litres/hr accurate to 2%.

A custom valve designed by Valvestock is permanently submersed under 6m of water, allowing treatment company Ashford Water Works to empty sludge from a settlement tank before cleaning and refilling.

Parts had to meet WRC approvals and the valve had to be handwheel and electrically operated. A problem was the 8.5m long control shaft fitted into the valve at up to 20 off vertical. The ball and socket joint had to house the angled shaft while ensuring the seal stayed horizontal.

Designed to minimise contamination in low-flow food, medical and similar duties, Hygienic SL pumps from Mono handle flow rates up to 13.5m3/hr at pressures up to 12bar.

Surfaces in contact with the product are made from food-approved material, internal surfaces are made of polished stainless steel.

The pump’s smooth action makes it ideal for handling shear-sensitive, abrasive and viscous materials, Mono says.

Kyle’s new small cutter pump is a small-flow, low-head submersible and dry well pump providing capacities from 1 to 4litres/sec at heads up to 4m.

Using the Mengin cutter principle, the pump has a channelled impeller with blades extended into a sharp edged cutting cone rotating against a fixed adjustable knife with hardened steel blade.

The cutting cone guides and cuts raw sewage or polluted waste and debris into pumpable segments, allowing blockage free flow through the system. The PS65 pump has a single or three-phase, 1 or 2kW motor protected to IP68.
