Racal Radio has won a contract worth more than £26m to supply the British Army and Royal Marines with an advanced communications electronic warfare system.

The contract confirms Racal as the sole supplier of such systems to the Ministry of Defence.

Project Odette provides for automatic switching of frequencies to avoid messages being picked up by the enemy.

Several US and European competitors had vied for the contract.

Racal will provide a variety of commercial off-the-shelf equipment for Odette, including software and receiving systems. Deliveries will start early next year.

The systems will be installed in Land Rovers, the BV206 all-terrain vehicle and sundry armoured fighting vehicles.

Voice and data communications between vehicles will be provided by Racal’s Panther enhanced digital radio (EDR) under this contract. ‘This is ‘a significant procurement of the Panther EDR by the MoD’, said a Racal spokesman.
