Railtrack has lost the battle with train manufacturers and operators over who will pay for track alterations to accommodate new trains.

In a letter to Railtrack chief executive Gerald Corbett, Mike Grant, chief executive of the Strategic Rail Authority, said it was Railtrack’s duty to keep up with developments in rolling stock.

The dispute boiled over when Railtrack attempted to force Connex and Adtranz to pay for platform alterations to suit trains Railtrack had already approved.

Delays in handing over track specifications to Virgin for the West Coast Main Line upgrade have already resulted in undisclosed penalties for Railtrack.

* A train crash on Monday night between two commuter trains near Lewes Station in East Sussex is suspected to have been caused by one train passing a signal at danger. There were no injuries in the slow-speed collision. John Prescott has ordered an inquiry.
