Rape seed cooking oil from Tesco proved just the job for pressing the wheels onto the axles of the first new mainline steam railway locomotive to be built in Britain for almost 40 years. The Tornado’s six 6ft 8in diameter driving wheels, four 3ft 2in front bogie wheels and two 3ft 8in trailing wheels will get the Tesco touch. A1 Steam Locomotive Trust chose the traditional method of pressing on wheels to avoid damaging the bearings.
