Industrial centrifuges used to separate sugar crystals from liquor have specified Siemens variable speed drives to provide controlled power in a £500,000 upgrade project. The four centrifuges process up to 650 kilograms of sugar every three minutes and are to be used in the production of refined white sugar from cane at the Ingenio Puga factory in north west Mexico.

The drives were set up to deliver a peak power of 270kW at key stages of the acceleration and deceleration of the centrifuge. Performance is achieved using the overload capacity of the Siemens drive and enabled a smaller size of drive than would be required if the overload facility was not available. Variable speed drives units were chosen instead of cheaper 3 speed motors to operate the centrifuges because the drives enabled bigger units to be built.
