The remainder of the UK’s coal industry may be poised to pass into US ownership. Reports this week suggested RJB Mining, which owns most of the UK’s remaining mines, will be subject to a bid of more than £100m from Renco, the industrial conglomerate owned by billionaire Ira Rennert. Talks between the two companies are believed to be at an advanced stage, and any deal would virtually mark the end of domestic control of UK coal mining.
