A specially designed robot being tested before the decommissioning of BNFL’s radioactive Caesium Extraction Plant at Sellafield. The robot has a telescopic cylinder giving it a reach of 2.2m and a slewing ring which allows it to rotate 270. Twin lifting cylinders can lift the robot’s telescopic arm up to 70 from floor level. Decommissioning at Sellafield to remove all highly contaminated structures, plant and equipment is due to take four years, starting in 1999.
