A cybernetic challenge match in which robots will play volleyball against each other has been scheduled for 13 September at the University of Reading.

The challenge, which involves teams from five universities in Britain and Ireland, will require each university to design, build and programme two autonomous robots, using bricks developed by Lego with built-in microchips.

To compete, the two robots making up each volleyball team must be able to communicate with each other, respond quickly and adaptively when the ball gets into their court, and get the ball back over to the opposition.

The five university teams are from Reading, Manchester, Edinburgh, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cardiff.
