ABB Industrial Systems has appointed Steve Ruddell as general manager of its Manchester-based UK variable speed drives and motors business. He replaces Ian Rennie, who moves to Zurich to become responsible for ABB’s global variable speed drives business.
Rennie joined ABB after working for GEC and Brush.
Peter Siddall, chairman of Siddall and Hilton, is the new president of the UK Steel Association. He takes over from British Steel director Michael Robson.
David Fletcher, chairman and chief executive of Sheffield Forgemasters, has been elected vice president.
Binnie Black and Veatch, the civil and process consulting engineering group, has appointed Chris Binnie, great grandson of one of its founders, as deputy chairman.
He worked for pre-merger Binnie & Partners until 1978, and joins from WS Atkins, where he was director, South-East Asia. He is also visiting professor of design at Kingston University and holds an honorary doctorate in engineering from Bradford University.
David Tattersall has been appointed general manager, engineering, at Brymon Airways. He was previously British Airways’ engineering fleet planning manager.
Siemens’ industrial projects & systems division has appointed Stuart Campbell as general manager of its water business. He succeeds Dave Landon, who is now director of the division.
Malcolm Coster has been appointed chairman of MTL Instruments Group. He is a chartered engineer and, before joining MTL, worked for British Petroleum. He has also worked for Coopers & Lybrand and Unisys.
Brunel University’s first Midland Bank chair of innovation will be Dr Clive Butler. He was previously reader in the manufacturing and engineering systems department.
The professorship is intended to help Midland Bank assess business ideas from small, technology-based companies.

Serck Heat Transfer has appointed Nigel Amery as UK account manager for its exhaust gas cooling division. He was previously sales manager for Wilmid, part of the Wagon Automotive Group.
Frank Cutri has been appointed sales and marketing director of Burton-on-Trent-based Silvertown UK, the elastomeric engineering subsidiary of the UniPoly group.
He joins from Urbis, a capital lighting systems and acoustics company.
John Roques has become a non-executive director of BBA Group, which is involved in materials technology and aviation. He will retire from his post as senior partner and chief executive of accountant Deloitte & Touche in April.
Roques is also a non-executive director of British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) and advised the previous government on the privatisation of British Gas.
Machine tool company Bridgeport has made four new sales appointments. Ray Wortley has been promoted to regional manager at the company’s southern England sales & technical centre, while Phil Charnick, Jez Lewin and Mark Donnelly become regional sales managers.
Dr Graham Maile has been appointed chairman of the UK Third Generation Advisory Group, which advises the government on technical aspects of universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) licences.
Dr Maile is director of strategic consulting at communications technology specialists Plextek.
UMTS will allow multimedia services to be delivered over mobile networks.
