A new integrated control and safety system, the `Trusted ICS’ range, has been launched by ICS.

A claimed investment of £20m has resulted in a TUV-certified system which can mix Sil levels 1 to 3 and control in one processor. The development is a combination of ICS triple-redundant systems, L&N MAX DCS systems, Transmitton SCADA and Brisco sub-sea experience.

It’s anticipated, according to specialists from UKOOA, that the HSE and UKOOA will reconsider promoting hard-wired solutions for IEC 1508 Sil level 3 applications due to economies that can be realised with Trusted which do no compromise integrity.

Voting in the TMR system is done in hardware based on NASA work in the USA. Three ranges of I/O are included – triplicated, simplex and telemetry links, which can be mixed. Each module features 1508-compliant analogue handling with intelligent I/O filtering. The operating system can host five execution languages.

Key, says ICS, is Trusted’s ability to match the application to the hardware and software required to avoid paying a premium price.

Industries likely to use the system include oil and gas, petrochemical, power station control, rail transit and mining. Typical applications include burner management and turbine control.
