The total number of JSFs likely to be sold is about 3,000, a considerable number for a military aircraft, even before export potential is considered.

The US Air Force plans to buy 1,763 JSFs to replace its F-16s and A-10s, the US Navy will buy 480 to replace A-6s and the US Marine Corps will buy 642 to replace both its F-18s and Harriers.

Although the UK has still not signed on the dotted line, Britain’s Royal Navy is likely to buy 60 JSFs to replace its Sea Harrier after 2010. The JSF will probably replace the RAF’s Harriers too, adding another 90 aircraft.
