Scottish Power is mobilising the coal lobby to oppose PowerGen’s plan to build a 700MW gas-fired power station in Scotland.

The local generator argues that the proposed plant at Gartcosh in Lanarkshire would damage the Scottish coal industry and specifically threaten the future of its 1,200MW Cockenzie power station.

PowerGen insists it needs the plant to supply Scottish customers on a competitive basis.
