Water and waste group Severn Trent is set to buy solid waste operator UK Waste for £380m. The purchase should establish Severn Trent subsidiary Biffa Waste Services as the dominant solid waste business in the UK. The deal is part of Severn’s strategy of expanding its non-regulated business. Pre-tax profits at the company fell 22%, partly as a result of price restrictions at its regional water business.
