BP may have discovered a third significant oil field to the west of the Shetland Islands.

The company, working in a joint venture with Shell, announced this week that an exploration well drilled in 850m of water on block 204/19 last year had found a potentially commercial volume of hydrocarbons.

The well, about 20km north of the Foinaven and Schiehallion fields that BP and Shell are developing, was not tested, and the operator offered no estimate of the discovery’s size.
