More small companies will be exempted from packaging waste regulations following an increase in the threshold for inclusion from £1m to £2m turnover.

The latest changes to the producer responsibility obligations (packaging waste) regulations for companies above the threshold require packaging manufacturers to recover 9% of packaging – down from 11%. Packers will have to recover 37% – up 1% – and sellers must recover 48%, also up 1%.

The Federation of Small Businesses welcomed the move. `The exemption will mean less paperwork for our members which itself creates waste. We would like to pursue this kind of exemption in other areas,’ said an FSB spokesman.

The Engineering Employers’ Federation said the higher revenue threshold would exclude some of its smaller members, but the 50 tonnes per year limit was still too low to exempt most manufacturers.
