DaimlerChrysler sold 570,100 Mercedes-Benz and Smart passenger cars during the first six months of the year – a 10% rise on the same period in 1999. The company produced 6% more Mercedes and 81% more Smart cars. Germany remains the most important market for the two marques, with 206,700 passenger cars sold there in the period to June, an increase of 3%. Diesel sales continued to rise with more than 41% of all Mercedes-Benz cars now equipped with diesel engines.
