A smoke monitor manufactured by Codel International and designed primarily for use in industrial applications has found itself on the big screen.

Film maker Paramount British Pictures has adopted one of Codel’s 100D3 opacity monitors to help to reproduce consistent levels of smoke used for special effects on the set of one of its latest productions, Event Horizon, being filmed at Pinewood studios, Buckinghamshire.

The monitor utilises a beam of visible light from an LED source which is modulated at 1,200Hz.

The smoke detector enables Paramount’s special effects team to ensure that the smoke density is always the same on successive takes’, a prerequisite for the visual continuity of the final edited version.
