Robinsons Soft Drinks in Norwich, one of the most automated plants of its kind, has upgraded and integrated its control system from GE Fanuc Series Six PLCs to 90-70 and -30 PLCs with the company’s Field Control I/O networked over a Genius bus.

System integrator, Rossmore Computer Automation took on the project. Its Desmond Shiels says: `Our task was to integrate the control of the final two stages of an eight stage project, ensuring maximum process efficiency.’

This was achieved through the higher functionality and built-in high speed networking of Series 90-70s and Genius, in particular providing remote diagnostics and a better programming environment in the form of Sequential Function Charts instread of Ladder.

Since the Series Six PLCs are compatible with 90-70, Rossmore was able to re-use existing I/O – reducing costs and installation and commissioning time. Rossmore also developed a conversion routine which automatically changed 80% of the existing Ladder configuration from the Series Six to ready-made code for the 90-70s – reducing coding time and ensuring 100% accuracy.

Now, nine networked 90-70 PLCs handle over 6,000 I/O across the plant, controlling the delivery and handling of bulk liquid and dry powders, pre-mixing, batch make-up, blending and processing. CIP is also handled by two more 90-70s.
