More details have emerged on the performance of Sun Microsystems’ Ultra Enterprise 10000 server, code named Starfire and launched late in January (Sys.Build, February, page 16).

Sun claims that Starfire, which is aimed at multi-terabyte data centres, offers radical performance. Starfire with the Solaris o-s was tested on the Transaction Processing Performance Council Benchmark D, and delivered some 20% better performance than its nearest competitor – at one third of the cost.

John Pattenden, Sun’s UK server product marketing manager, said that the figures force users to recognise the scalability and power of symmetric multi-processing (SMP) over massively parallel processing systems.
