Co-Steel Sheerness has improved the consistency of its reinforcing bar by using a Landscan infrared line scanner, from Land Infrared, to measure temperature profiles.

Installed at the end of the water quench section, the Landscan system has overcome the problem of the movement of round bar during rolling, which frequently takes the product out of the line of sight of fixed installation temperature measuring systems.

Spot radiation thermometers targeted on one point for each strand were also unable to provide the accuracy required.

Landscan measures a one-dimensional thermal profile across a wide target area, displaying the data as a temperature-position graph, or – as in the case of moving targets – as a two-dimensional temperature contour map.

By referring to a temperature `map’, the operator can adjust the cooling rate if necessary.
