Corus last week opened its huge £40m UK `steel park’ in Wolverhampton. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott visited the 20ha former tube works redevelopment, which will be the largest supply and processing hub in Europe, with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes. A 350-strong workforce is employed in the long products and engineering bar centre, coil slitting facility and the automotive service section, which produces car panels. Corus and automotive systems supplier Magna are due to open a specialist laser welding business, AutoLaser Technologies, in May. A Corus spokesman would not rule out the possibility that a 250,000sq ft warehouse planned for 2001 could also be used to store aluminium.
