Wing Excavator, a 27 tonne diverless tool carries out remote inspection of a North Sea gas pipeline. The project, in June, for NAM’s K-14 platform off the Dutch coast, involved the deburial of 160m of 10in concrete coated pipe, leaving it accessible to divers for repair following remote inspection and subsequent reburial. Fine dense quartz sand was cleared from the pipeline and backfilled using the twin motors on Wing’s underside. These deliver a combined downward thrust of up to 4.5 tonnes to provide a low power displacement rate of 1,400m3/hr. Deburial and ROV inspection took two passes of 35 minutes each. Backfilling from the spoil side of the trench took 75 minutes. Wing is supplied by levelling and trenching specialist Silt
