Next month’s Competitiveness White Paper will cite the SMMT Industry Forum initiative to improve supply chain performance as a model for other sectors to follow, Trade and Industry secretary Peter Mandelson said on Wednesday.

Under the initiative, engineers from Honda, Nissan, General Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen spent two years training 25 Industry Forum engineers, who will now work with supply chain firms.

Mandelson pledged £2.5m from the DTI to enable the seconded engineers to stay on for another two years.
