GKN has been invited to submit proposals to the Swiss army for a new armoured vehicle to carry infantry. Any contract could be worth several hundred million pounds.

An export version of the Warrior infantry fighting vehicle could be offered by GKN; it has already built hundreds of the basic Warrior for the British Army.

GKN says it is studying the Swiss requirements.

Any proposal must be delivered next month, when it would compete with rival armoured vehicle suppliers in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the US.

A shortlist of two or three companies should be drawn up by the summer.

Trials would take place next year. An order for a first batch of 180 is due in 1999; orders for a further 130 would follow.

The Swiss want a tracked armoured vehicle which is armed with a 30mm cannon.
