BASF is to shed 260 jobs at its Seal Sands site in Teesside as part of a restructuring programme by the German chemicals giant.

The job losses, which will be phased in over 18 months, will be spread across all departments.

A factor in the decision is the price of acrylonitrile, one of the main products at the Seal Sands site, which has fallen sharply due to oversupply in Europe. East Asian demand for the fibre has also collapsed.
