Tension in the 32 tie down cables at the Severn crossing can be checked by monitoring the hydraulic pressure in a special jack.

The pressure is monitored using Model 800 high pressure transducers, from Nobel Systems. These portable, flexible and rugged transducers were installed into a confined stressing envelope underneath the deck.

Pressures up to 20,000psi are sensed, and fed to Nobel’s UMC600 digital load indicators. The unit has front panel configuration, with a prompting sequence for zero, span and all calibration parameters.
