A portable diagnostic system hired from Cegelec Projects proved itself recently at Chartham Papers, looking for the cause of intermittent problems that had been bedevilling a paper machine control system.

Cegelec’s Overpower Monitor Lite uses the IBM ThinkPad laptop PC as the recording and visual interface. It’s attached to a steel box housing connections etc for 16 inputs.

You can configure it to trigger on a problem occurrence, with storage of pre- and post-trigger data, plus auto-reset. Recordings are referenced and time and date stamped, and can be e-mailed or copied to floppy for analysis. You can also hook up to a PC network.

In this case, following just one week’s analysis, the fault was shown to be in a drive gear mechanism – stripping down revealed a collapsed bearing.
