Thomson Marconi Sonar has won a multi-million pound order from Brunei for three sonars for offshore patrol vessels, which will be built on Clydeside by GEC Marine’s Yarrow shipyard.

Thomson Marconi Sonar said only that it had been awarded a contract for ‘a number of medium frequency hull-mounted sonars by an overseas customer’.

The sonars, designated TMS 4130C1, are members of the new TMS 4100 family of surface ship hull-mounted sonars.

The company said they draw on experience with Marconi’s Sonar 2050 fitted to all Royal Navy Type 23 frigates, and also with Thomson’s Spherion export and Slasm sonars.

The sonars are also understood to be closely related to Marconi’s Sonar 2051 export design, according to one defence industry consultant.
