Manufacturing output rose by 0.4% in March compared to February, according to the Office for National Statistics. But total production for the first quarter of the year was down by 0.5% in the previous quarter – the first quarterly fall in production since the end of 1998. Production of metals and metal products was flat over the quarter, while engineering and allied industries fell by 0.7%, food and drink by 0.5% and chemicals by 2%.
