Car manufacturer Toyota is expected to announce details of an investment approaching £200m at its Deeside engine plant tomorrow, during the visit of prime minister Tony Blair to Japan.

The investment in North Wales will provide engines for Toyota’s second European plant, which is to be built at Vallenciennes, France.

The contract to supply the engines could boost the plant’s output from its present 100,000 units a year to nearer 400,000 if planned growth at Valenciennes is achieved.

The Deeside factory, set up in 1992, is already due to increase capacity to 220,000 engines this year to equip the Corolla range to be built at Burnaston, Derbyshire.
