The pilot for a new People Skills Scoreboard, a training benchmark for engineering employers, was inaugurated yesterday by science and technology minister Ian Taylor.

The scoreboard, produced by the Joint Education and Training Policy Committee of the Engineering and Marine Training Authority and the Engineering Employers’ Federation, will be developed over the coming months.

It aims to provide employers with a range of measures of training activity against which they can compare their own performance.

The pilot study of 23 engineering firms shows that companies typically invest around 4% of payroll, and just under 1% of turnover on training.

A more comprehensive scoreboard will be published before the end of the year, said a spokesman.
