GEC-Alsthom has picked up an additional £36m train order from Great Western Trains as a result of a revised franchise deal.

The order, for eight five-carriage 125mph trains, follows a planned stepping-up of the frequency of the high-speed service between London and Bristol, with a half-hourly schedule due to start from June 1999, earlier than originally planned.

GEC-Alsthom now has contracts for Great Western worth a total of £100m, with an existing £64m order for 27 trains for North West Trains, also part of Great Western.
