The UK is at the bottom of the European league for state subsidies to industry, according to a group of trade union leaders. UK aid payments are a mere 30% of the European Union average, calculated as level of aid per person employed in the sector. John Monks, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, said that the figures showed it was essential for the government to support industry while it was struggling with the strength of the pound against the euro.
