National Power, Britain’s largest generator, has confirmed it is planning to diversify further from its home market with the construction of two gas-fired power plants in the US.

A spokesman said the company was close to identifying sites in New England for the 500MW combined-cycle gas turbine units, which will involve an investment of about $450m.

The CCGTs give National Power an interest in eight US plants, extending the policy of reducing dependence on UK electricity generation. `It’s part of our strategy to invest abroad,’ said the spokesman.
