Unemployment has fallen to a 25-year low. Official figures show the total without work now stands at 1.1 million, or 3.8% of the workforce, while the broader ILO measure stood at 1.67 million. However, the government faced criticism of its New Deal programme, which was designed to get young unemployed people into work. The government says it has helped 216,000 people find work, but the National Institute for Economic and Social Research said only 13,000 new jobs have been created as a result.
