A system of Prosafe trapped key valve interlocks, produced by Sigma Controls, of Wigan, has been installed on Phillips’ Ekofisk II 2/4 – X wellhead platform to control fluid pumping sequences.

The offshore oil platform, stores glycol, methanol and diesel for use in its drilling operation. A common pipeline and pump is used to inject each liquid individually, as dictated by the interlocking valves. The trapped key sequence prevents simultaneous pumping from the three storage tanks.

In practice, the system is as simple as it is secure. All three valve interlocks have a `B’ key, which locks the valve in the closed position and remains trapped.

The system shares a single `A’ key, which permits the `B’ key to release the valve lock.
