A US-owned maker of industrial valves in the West Midlands is to close, with the loss of more than 100 jobs.

In a letter to employees, management at Charles Winn ( Valves ) of Digbeth in Birmingham blamed a dramatic decline in orders for the move. The company’s main customers included the Royal Navy and the North Sea oil industry. Exports were also hit by the strength of the pound.

A 90-day consultation period is now under way. The first jobs are expected to go in November. Final closure is set for March 2000.
