Vosper Thornycroft Controls, of Southampton, has won an order to provide gas turbine controls and machinery monitoring systems for a roll-on/roll-off ship being refitted for the US Military Sealift Command.

The contract, for almost £10m, covers supplying a Digicon gas turbine controller and the latest version of its Vicam monitoring system.

These will be fitted to a 50,000 tonne, Ukrainian-built vessel which is now being reflagged in the US and renamed the Roy M Wheat.

The Vicam system, which has been fitted to merchant ships and an Irish navy vessel, is being significantly updated for the US ship.

Some 1,000 channels will be used to provide status data on the ship’s engines, propulsion system, generator sets and auxiliary plant.

The Digicon and Vicam equipment will be delivered to the yard refitting the ship in Mobile, Alabama, by the end of this year.
