VSEL’s Barrow-in-Furness plant is refurbishing 24 British Army towed howitzers for export by the Ministry of Defence.
The reconditioned 155mm FH70 howitzers will be delivered to the MoD’s Disposal Sales Agency.
The contract is being overseen by Bruce Boden, VSEL’s Far East regional sales director.
VSEL said that ‘offers for the FH70s are from potential customers in the Far East and Europe’.
It is understood that 71 FH70s, which were built in collaboration with German and Italian partners, were originally delivered by VSEL to the British Army 17 years ago.
It is not clear whether the secondhand guns which are being refurbished for sale have been drawn from the British Army’s remaining stock of 47 FH70s or whether the howitzers were declared surplus earlier.
One possible Far Eastern customer for the FH70s could be Malaysia, whose armed forces already operate the weapon.
